Our First Macmillan Coffee Morning: A Small Start Worth Building On

Our First Macmillan Coffee Morning: A Small Start Worth Building On

The weather wasn’t on our side, but our first charity coffee morning gave us a reason to keep going.

In September, we tried something new at Movinglife Milton Keynes: bringing a charity coffee morning into our regular showroom open days.

The idea was simple. We already enjoy welcoming visitors with a cup of tea, a slice of cake and time for a conversation. Why not use that opportunity to support a good cause as well?

For our first event, we chose Macmillan Cancer Support—and we’re very glad we did.

A Quieter Day Than We Had Hoped

We had the refreshments ready and were looking forward to welcoming people. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas.

Poor conditions made for a challenging turnout, and the coffee morning was much quieter than we had hoped. Most of our showroom visitors came the following day instead.

Despite the challenging turnout, Movinglife made its own company donation to Macmillan Cancer Support. We wanted our support for the charity to extend beyond the number of people who were able to join us.

Thank You, Macmillan, for Helping Us Get Started

As first-time organisers, we had plenty to learn. Macmillan’s fundraising resources and practical guidance gave us a welcoming place to start, helping us understand what to prepare and how to bring our idea to life.

Their materials helped us build the knowledge, confidence and organisational skills to take that first step. They also gave us a foundation we can build on as we plan further charity events.

For us, that was an important part of the experience. We didn’t just organise one coffee morning—we began learning how to make supporting good causes a regular part of our showroom gatherings.

Taking the Lessons Forward

We’re not going to pretend our first coffee morning was a big fundraising success. It wasn’t the turnout we had hoped for, but it was a genuine beginning.

We learned from the preparation, the weather and the day itself. We’re taking those lessons into our next events, with the same straightforward aim: to bring people together, offer a warm welcome and create an opportunity to support a worthwhile cause.

Thank you to everyone who helped us prepare or stopped by, and to Macmillan for helping us find our feet.

A small beginning, a company contribution and plenty to build on. We’re looking forward to putting the kettle on again.
